Best Practices in Restorative Dentistry: Increasing Vertical Dimension

Dr. Steven Cutbirth, director of the Center for Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry, wrote a continuing education in dentistry course for the November/December 2008 issue of Practical Procedures & Aesthetic Dentistry (PPAD). In the issue, Dr. Cutbirth offers expert insight on the steps and considerations needed for increasing vertical dimension in the reconstruction of severely worn dentition.

“Clinicians often encounter dental patients who have lost tooth structure or demonstrate an insufficient vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). While reconstructing the proper VDO for such patients can be challenging, the use of a systematic approach can facilitate a successful and predictable treatment outcome.”

The article presents treatment planning and restorative considerations for the treatment of insufficient VDO.
